Managing Director Explained: Where MD Fits in the Title Hierarchy
You are matching a job to a salary survey and the title says "Managing Director." Is that the top executive of a business unit? A senior banker one step below partner? Or a courtesy title on a sales lead? Pick wrong and you benchmark the role against the wrong market by 50% or more.
"Managing Director" has no single meaning. It depends on the country, the industry, and the company. This page shows the three common meanings, how each maps to a U.S. level, and how to level the role without relying on the title.
TL;DR
- Outside the U.S., a Managing Director (MD) is usually the CEO of a company or subsidiary.
- In U.S. banking and consulting, MD is a senior rank, above Vice President and Director, and it is not a CEO.
- In other U.S. companies, MD often means a senior executive who runs a business unit or region, roughly at the SVP level.
- Level the job on scope: reporting line, budget or P&L, headcount, and decision authority. Never on the title alone.
The three meanings of Managing Director
Context | What MD usually means | Typical U.S. equivalent |
|---|---|---|
UK, India, Australia, and much of Europe | Top executive of the company or subsidiary | CEO or President |
Investment banking, consulting, asset management | Senior rank with client and revenue ownership | Senior VP to EVP |
U.S. corporate | Head of a business unit, region, or function | SVP |
The first meaning is the oldest. In UK company practice, the managing director is the board member who runs day-to-day operations. The law does not require the title. The Companies Act 2006 says "director" includes any person occupying the position of director, by whatever name called. So "managing director" is a job label your company assigns, not a statutory status.
MD in banking versus MD in a corporation
In a bank, the ladder often runs Analyst, Associate, Vice President, Director, Managing Director. The MD owns client relationships and revenue. Pay is heavily variable. That is a senior job, but the person may report to a division head, so the scope is far smaller than a CEO's.
In a U.S. corporation, MD is less standard. Some firms use it for the head of a region. Others use it for a senior individual contributor. If you want the full ladder, see AVP vs VP vs SVP vs EVP and Banking Job Titles Explained.
Why the difference matters for pay
Titles that sound alike can sit far apart in the market. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2025 median wage of $213,990 for chief executives and $105,770 for general and operations managers. A "Managing Director" could belong in either bucket. Survey matching on the title alone puts you at risk of overpaying, or of losing a leader to an offer you never saw coming.
How to level a Managing Director
Ask four questions, in this order:
- Who does the role report to? The CEO or board points to a top-executive job. A division head points lower.
- What is the P&L or budget? A $200 million P&L and a $5 million budget are not the same level.
- How many people roll up? Count direct and indirect reports.
- What can the role decide alone? Look at hiring, spending, and pricing authority.
Then score the job against your compensable factors. A point-factor evaluation does this on scope, so two "MDs" with different jobs land in different grades. For the wider framework, read Job Titles: A Complete Guide.

FAQ
Is a Managing Director higher than a CEO?
No. Where both titles exist, the CEO leads the whole organization. In some UK-style companies the two are the same person, or the MD runs a subsidiary and reports to a group CEO.
Is a Managing Director higher than a Vice President?
Usually, yes. In banking, MD ranks above VP and Director. In other industries, check the reporting line, because titles vary.
Is a Managing Director a C-suite title?
Not by default. It is C-suite only when the MD is the top executive of the company. A unit head is a senior leader, not a chief.
Is a Managing Director an officer of the company?
It depends on your bylaws and local law. The title alone does not make someone an officer or a legal director.
How do I benchmark a Managing Director?
Match on scope, not title. Use the four leveling questions above, then choose survey jobs with a similar reporting line, P&L, and headcount.
What does MD mean in a consulting firm?
It is usually a partner-level or near-partner role that sells work and leads engagements. Compare it to a senior VP or EVP in your architecture.
